A unique opportunity to be a part of the team delivering one of the biggest sporting events to happen in Christchurch! Open to all ages and experience with lots of roles available.

SailGP has several volunteer roles available to enable you to be part of the action, learn how large events run from a unique behind the scenes perspective and help them deliver a successful sporting event.

You’ll get training, a SailGP branded volunteer T Shirt, meal voucher, transport from the CBD over to the event and more.

Details on dates, roles, and what’s required below. To volunteer, please email Kyra, SailGP Registration Volunteer Manager at kyrasailgp@gmail.com

Dates

Wednesday     15 March 2023

Thursday         16 March 2023

Friday              17 March 2023

Saturday          18 March 2023

Sunday            19 March 2023

Venue

The SailGP event is being held at Naval Point in Whakaraupō Lyttelton. There will also be a Live Site in the CBD beside Te Pae, the Convention Centre. We will be needing helpers in both areas.

Roles Available

Monday 13 - Sunday 19 March - SailGP Inspire Learning Ambassadors

You'll be helping our Inspire team deliver the learning program to the local schools during the week. This will require manning a particular STEM activity area, helping set up and pack up during the week. Over the weekend of the event the tents may move into the fan village where you can tell people about the learning program and what is involved.

Great if you are good with kids, have an interest in teaching and if you've got a sailing background - but not necessary.

Wednesday 15 - Sunday 19 March - Dock Hands

We will need help with getting our people on and off their boats in the marina and assisting on our new floating docks at Naval Point. Also assisting with refuelling, making sure everyone is wearing life jackets, wearing their kill-cords, directing boat traffic, helping get boats on and off the trailers etc.

You will need to be an experienced boatie for these roles and have a VHF license and a minimum of a Day Skipper qualification. You may also have to drive to and from the marina so your own reliable car and a clean driver’s license is also essential.

Wednesday 15 - Sunday 19 March – Dolphin Spotters

We are going to need a group of people positioned around the harbour and on the water looking for our treasured Hectors Dolphins or other marine mammals, to ensure that they don’t get too close to the boats when they’re out on the water.

This role would suit someone who has some knowledge of marine mammals and with good eyesight. Full training will be given.

Wednesday 15 - Sunday 19 March – On Water

Our on-water Volunteers need to have extensive boating experience and qualifications, and preferably come with your own RIB (boat). (We have filled most of these roles already.)

Friday 17 March - Official Fan Village Setup

We will need helpers for the SailGP HQ Team to set up the Official Fan Village & Live Site. This is a logistical role helping to set up signs, move tables and this requires a level of physical fitness & ability.

Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 March – Registration & Ticketing

You’ll be welcoming thousands of guests & spectators to the event, and you’ll be the first person most people will meet. You’ll be helping with scanning tickets and assigning accreditation wristbands and spectator access.

Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 March – Check In

Working in our Media Centre or Adrenaline Lounge, you’ll be providing the best on-site customer service going. We’ll ensure you receive a full briefing so you can answer all the questions with confidence.

Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 March – Brand Ambassadors

You’ll be providing answers to questions from one of our Info Points within the Official Fan Village or at our CBD Live Site. Usually these are questions around directions, lost property, and that kind of thing. You’ll receive a full briefing so you can answer any questions with confidence. We will swap teams over during the event, so you’ll get the opportunity to experience both sites.

Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 March – Bus Ushers

You’ll be responsible for ensuring that the guests in the CBD Live Site are getting on and filling up the buses before they depart to head over to Lyttelton. You’ll then come over to Lyttelton to watch some of the action and help us do the same thing to ensure everyone gets back to the city again.

Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 March – Grandstand Ushers

You’ll be helping people to find their seats in the Grandstands and answering questions about directions. We will ensure you have a full briefing so you can answer any questions with confidence.

Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 March – People & Vehicle Management

In the high foot traffic areas, we will need your help to keep people on the footpath and off the roads. There will be limited parking for corporate guests on the Lyttelton Recreation Grounds, and we will need some help to direct people to the right places, but the rest of the event will be car free.

Perks

You’ll get the unique opportunity to be a part of the team who delivers one of the biggest sporting events to happen in Christchurch! This is an awesome opportunity to learn more about how large events run from a unique behind the scenes perspective and will be a great addition to your CV. We will kit you out in a SailGP branded volunteer T Shirt, give you a meal voucher, transport you from the CBD over to the event and more!

Apparel & Clothing

Our Volunteers and Brand Ambassadors need to look the part, after all, you are a valuable part of the SailGP team and you’re the first and last people the guests and spectators will see.

In most roles, on the day we will provide you with a branded T-Shirt, which goes on your outer most layer. In all cases we request that your trousers (can be jeans) are black or dark grey. You’ll most likely be on your feet all day, so comfortable shoes are essential. The wind can be cold over in Lyttelton, so dress appropriately for the conditions (raincoat, sunscreen etc.) Bring a drink bottle to fill up at one of our water fill stations.

Identification

Your branded T-Shirt will act as the main point of identification, but we will also provide you with a wristband that ensures you have access to the right areas.

Check-In & Briefing

We will give you details on where to meet and who will be briefing you for the various roles.

Transport & Parking

There will be no parking available in Lyttelton, and the tunnel will be closed between 12.00 and 6.00pm.  We will be providing buses to transport you from the CBD Live Site over to Lyttelton and back to the CBD again. We may also give some volunteers a parking pass.

Health & Safety

Your health & safety is important to us, and we will give you a full safety briefing when you come for your briefing. If you notice any hazards or have any safety concerns, please bring it to the attention of a SailGP staff member.
